How to Repair a Dead Car Key
Sometimes extreme heat or cold can cause a car key to not function properly. It is best to wait a few minutes before replacing it.

Dead Key Fob Batteries
Modern key fobs let us to open doors, trunks and tailgates without having fumble around for a physical key. Some key fobs even come with a built-in key that can be used to start our vehicles. The fobs are powered by a tiny battery. If this battery dies, the key fob will no longer transmit a signal that can trigger the vehicle. There are a variety of ways to fix a dead key fob and get your car operating again.
First, check whether the key fob actually dead. If it seems to be dead, you'll have to replace the batteries. You can do this yourself by disconnecting the fob from its clip, or using an screwdriver with a flat-head. Be cautious not to put too much pressure on the fob or you may end up damaging the fob. Also, make sure that you're using the right type of battery. Some models might require a different type of battery. Many car manufacturers have a backup system that can be activated when the battery on the key fob is low. Ford for instance has a slot which is dedicated to the key fob. Broken Key Ring
The key fob's internal chip is what communicates with your car's immobilizer system in order to start the engine. The chip could be damaged or there could be programming mistakes. If this occurs, your key fob won't be able to transmit the correct identification code, and your car won't begin. In some instances a malfunctioning transponder key can also be caused by physical damage or wear and tear to the key shell or contact pads.
Often the moment a key fob begins to fail to communicate with the immobilizer system of your vehicle and you notice specific warning indicators on the dashboard. This could be warnings about errors flashing lights, or the key not locking the car. If you notice these warnings contact your local locksmith immediately for a replacement key fob or repair.
If you carry a lot of keys, it is easy to damage the key ring. This could cause the key fob to snap in half this is one of the most frequent causes of car keys breaking. If this happens, you can attempt to use super glue to fix it by applying a small amount of the glue to both sides of the split and then gently pressing them together. It is important to use a gel-type glue that has a slow drying time to prevent drips or runniness.

Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs broke off the small key ring that is at the top, which is where it connects to the keyfob. It appears to be made of very soft metal or plastic. I've made a hole in it, and then wet-sanded it to strengthen it, but I suspect the problem isn't resolved by this.
I've also wrapped the broken part of the ring with clear tape, but that does not seem to do any good. It's a shame, because I rely on the small split ring to keep my keys in place.
If the case of the key fob is damaged, you could usually open it and replace the battery if the battery is not already dead. Online kits are available, but they only provide an interim solution. It may be quicker to get it fixed by a professional. Alternatively, you might find the replacement case at a home improvement store or locksmith. These cases aren't as costly as the new key fob.
